We collect as little as we can, we never sell your data, and you can delete everything whenever you want.
1. What we collect
- Your email address, to sign you in and send you notifications about your cases.
- What you write: case titles, nicknames, your side, vote comments and promises.
- What you do: your votes and guesses, reports, the people you blocked, the cases you sent to someone by username, and points.
- The username you pick for the leaderboard. People who know it can send you a case (you choose who, on your account page).
- Your language, so emails and notifications reach you in it.
- Basic technical logs (like IP address and browser) kept by our hosting providers for security.
- If you vote without an account: your vote and guess, a random code kept in a cookie in your browser (so you vote once per case, and your votes follow you if you sign up), and a scrambled version of your internet address, used only to stop vote stuffing.
2. Who sees what
- Your email is never shown to anyone else.
- Your side stays private until both partners approve. Then voters see it under your nickname.
- Votes are anonymous. Comments are shown without your name.
- Your username is public on the leaderboard, with your points. It's never shown on the cases you're part of, so it can't be used to tell which cases are yours.
- The Vota admin can see cases, reports and account emails to keep the app safe.
3. Services we use
We only share data with the companies that run parts of Vota for us:
- Supabase: database and sign-in.
- Vercel: hosting the website.
- Resend: sending emails.
- GitHub: private nightly backups, kept for 30 days.
- Sentry: error reports, without your email or IP address.
- PostHog: which pages are visited and which steps people complete (like “started a case” or “voted”), so we can see where the app is confusing. Linked to an anonymous account number, never your email, and never the text of a case.
- Anthropic: an AI model reads case text and vote comments to check them before they're shown, and translates cases into Vota's other languages. Anthropic doesn't use this data to train its models.
Some of these services store data outside Canada, including in the United States.
4. How long we keep it
Until you delete it. Deleting your account permanently removes your email, every case you're part of, your notifications and reports. Votes you cast on other people's cases stay as anonymous votes.
Finished cases are deleted for good 7 days after voting closes, with their sides and comments. Both partners are warned the day before. Your points and stats stay.
5. Your rights
You can see, correct or delete your information. Delete everything yourself from your account page, or email us for anything else. The person in charge of protecting personal information at Vota is Ayman Zriek (hello@getvota.com).
6. Cookies
We only use the cookies needed to keep you signed in and remember your language. No ads, and no tracking cookies: usage statistics are counted without cookies. If you vote without an account, one more cookie holds a random code so you can vote only once per case.
7. Age
Vota is for people 18 and older.
